Our Roots

Hey, my name is Sarah. I moved to Western Washington from Arizona when I was 11 and consider Washington home. I have
15+
years of professional experience working with children from infancy through 5th grade students. I have worked in childcare, school and nanny settings. One of my passions when it comes to working with children is coming up with interactive projects and experiments to build on the skills and interests of the children I’m working with. I’m excited to witness the play and interactions of children of varying ages. I look forward to watching them teach and develop skills that many adults in more structured settings would claim are beyond their years. I look forward to getting to know you!
Hi, I’m Sophia. As the youngest child in my family, I grew up living vicariously through the younger children in my neighborhood to get the feeling of being a big sibling. I began babysitting at 10 and basically never stopped. I have 20 years of professional experience working with children ages 1-10. I have worked in a variety of childcare settings as assistant and lead teacher and taught Head Start in West Olympia for 7 years. I’ve also worked with Olympia Parks and Recreation summer camps. Some of my passions in working with young children are reading, telling stories, writing down the stories of the children and having them direct a dramatic rendition of their story. I’m also a big believer in the value of rough and tumble play. I’m excited to watch a group of children that are strangers develop into a community family.

We met and became friends when we worked together at The Evergreen State College Child Care Center back around 2006. We believe that children are more capable and competent than most care settings and schools allow them to experience. We want to foster an environment where children of varying ages get to explore, adventure and assist each other in their learning and play. We believe strongly in play based emergent learning and Conscious Discipline. We want to see children climbing, jumping, building, digging, getting dirty, being adventurous, and truly playing.

We want Roots and Rhythms to become a learning community, within the greater Olympia community. There is a wealth of resources surrounding us in Olympia and we want to help children become rooted in this place that we all call home.
